We have all heard of writer’s block, but inventors can experience the same thing while developing a new product. Recently, most people have been working from home either full-time or hybrid, but trying to stay creative while working from home can be difficult. Here are some to help keep those creative juices flowing.
Step One: Creating a Work Space
Make sure you don’t work from the places that you usually dedicate to relaxation or sleep. Set up a section of your home that is dedicated to work, even if it is your kitchen table. This compartmentalization of space can help to facilitate new and innovative ideas. Studies have shown that working from your bed or couch leads to lower productivity. This devoted space will keep you in the right headspace to remain on task throughout the day.
Not everyone has the luxury of a home office, but a decluttered spot where you can work on your product will help you remain creative and productive..
Step Two: Distractions
Our digital lives can be decluttered as well. By isolating ourselves from distractions such as television and phones we are aiding the process of focusing on the task at hand. If inventing isn’t your primary job, be sure to block out times in your day for your project.
Working on your product in small increments throughout the day or weekend will prevent burnout and frustration. Also, setting up a to-do list will help manage your day and relieve stress when you complete a task. Rather than trying to solve one large problem with your idea, start by breaking down the main problem into a list of smaller problems and attempt to solve them each, one by one.
Limiting distractions may be easier said than done, but it’s essential to figuring out how to inspire yourself while working at home.
Step Three: Taking Breaks
Taking mental breaks is very important when working on a project. Whether it is talking to friends and family or watching an episode of your favorite tv show, it will help you reset your mind.
Adding exercise into your daily routine will alleviate stress. Even taking a short walk around the block can release endorphins in your brain and relieve tension in your body.
Step Four: Daily Routine
Wake up at the same time and give your brain time to wake up before diving into your invention. A step as small as changing out your pajamas can increase productivity.
My routine of waking up, making my bed, eating breakfast, and letting my body and brain wake up before clocking in has completely improved my motivation to work and create.
Step Five: Reward Yourself
Be sure to reward yourself when you make progress on your product. Allow yourself a piece of your favorite candy if I complete a task or complete an objective in your process. This little boost can give you what you need to move onto the next job, and keep up your motivation.
Step 6: Diversify Your Pallet
Having other hobbies and creative pursuits outside of inventing can do wonders for your pallet. This allows you to sidestep brainblocks and begin a different creative pursuit whenever you feel stagnant.
Developing products takes time and isn’t something you should rush. Setting up a good home base and routine will improve your mentality and fortify your dedication to the craft. Practicing good habits, and working day-by-day towards your goal will help you achieve results!
